The CEO of Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, expressed skepticism about a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, particularly in light of the anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Thursday, Papperger stated he would welcome an end to the war, but acknowledged his expectations for a near-term conclusion are limited.
He emphasized the crucial need for Ukrainian involvement in all decision-making processes, specifically regarding the country’s territorial future. Papperger asserted that a lasting solution cannot be achieved without Ukrainian consent, predicting that no resolution will be reached in the next twelve months. He believes Russia’s demands, including preventing Ukraine from joining NATO and effectively surrendering significant sovereignty, are unacceptable to Kyiv. “The Ukrainians will continue to fight as they have done until now; they will not accept this” he stated.
When questioned about President Putin’s willingness to pursue peace, Papperger expressed doubt. He highlighted the persistent high demand for defense materials, leading his company to pursue expanded manufacturing capacity. Rheinmetall is currently in discussions with the German government regarding long-term programs focused on vehicles, drones and ammunition.
