UN Chief Warns of Famine Risk

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Initiative has issued a stark warning that the “worst-case scenario of famine” is currently unfolding within the Gaza Strip. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reiterated his urgent call for unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, emphasizing the need for a significant increase in assistance.

“The trickle of goods must become an ocean” Guterres stated. “Food, water, medicine and fuel must flow in abundance and without impediment.

The Secretary-General affirmed that the situation’s severity is undeniable. “Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions. This is not a warning. It is a reality unfolding before our eyes”. He described the situation as an “almanac” that must end.

To avert the predicted famine, Guterres stressed the necessity for all parties involved to intensify their efforts. He called for “an immediate and sustained humanitarian ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid throughout Gaza.

The IPC Initiative’s assessment highlights a recent escalation of the conflict and displacement within Gaza. Food and access to essential goods and services have deteriorated to “an unprecedented level”. Growing evidence indicates widespread hunger, malnutrition and disease, contributing to an increase in deaths attributable to hunger. Current data reveals that most areas of Gaza have reached the hunger threshold, while Gaza City has surpassed the acute malnutrition threshold.

The IPC Initiative urges the urgent implementation of measures to facilitate substantial, life-saving humanitarian assistance without obstruction. It is identified as the sole means to prevent further fatalities and catastrophic human suffering.
