Union Berlin and FC St. Pauli shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw during Union Berlin’s first match of the 28th round of the Bundesliga.
Initially, the visiting St. Pauli side looked to be in control. In the 25th minute, Mathias Pereira opened the scoring with a fine volley from 25 yards out. Although Union Berlin dominated the action in the first half, they were unable to convert their chances. The Hamburg team showcased a solid defense and seized one of the few opportunities to take the lead. However, Union pressed for the equalizer but was repeatedly thwarted by the well-performing St. Pauli goalkeeper, Nikola Vasilj.
The deadlock was broken in the second half when Andrej Ilic scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute, heading in from a corner taken by Derrick Köhn. Following this, the match opened up into an exciting exchange where both teams had chances to secure the win. St. Pauli faced pressure at times but managed to retain the draw through a tenacious performance. Even a red card shown to St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine during stoppage time after a foul did not change the outcome.
In the league standings, St. Pauli remains in 16th place, while Union Berlin drops to 10th. St. Pauli will continue their campaign on Saturday against Bayern Munich, while Union Berlin faces Heidenheim on the same day.
