Union Holds Narrow Edge Over AfD in Latest RTL/ntv Poll, Merz Faces Lowest Approval This Year

In a weekly poll carried out by Forsa for RTL and ntv, the Union (CDU/CSU) stays slightly ahead of the AfD. Both parties are tied at 26 percent, while the AfD holds its share at 25 percent.

The Greens report a modest lead over the SPD, with 15 percent to the Greens and 12 percent to the SPD. The Left remains at 10 percent, the BSW at 3 percent, and other parties collectively at 9 percent, unchanged from last week. Non‑voters and undecideds now total 24 percent, higher than the 17.9 percent of non‑voters in the last federal election.

When asked about which party is most capable of solving Germany’s problems, little has shifted from last week. Twenty‑seven percent of the electorate trust the Union the most (17 percent), the AfD follows at 12 percent, slightly down by one point. The Greens receive 7 percent, the SPD 4 percent, and the Left 3 percent. A majority-54 percent-give no party the top rating for problem‑solving ability.

Regarding Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s performance, only 23 percent of respondents say they are satisfied, while 75 percent are dissatisfied. This marks a two‑point decline versus last week and the lowest support level for Merz this year. Among Union supporters, 37 percent are currently unhappy with his work.

The survey was conducted from 24 to 30 March and included 2 504 participants.
