Union, Left Party Clash Over Judge Selection

Negotiations between parliamentary groups in the Bundestag remain unresolved ahead of Thursday’s election for a new judge on the Federal Constitutional Court. Heidi Reichinnek, parliamentary group leader for the Left party (Die Linke), stated that the CDU/CSU group, often referred to collectively as the Union, has not engaged in discussions with her party.

Reichinnek, speaking in Berlin on Monday prior to a Left party parliamentary group meeting, indicated that the group will be deliberating on their strategy for the upcoming vote and assessing internal preferences.

She expressed disappointment that the Union failed to initiate dialogue, particularly regarding assurances that potential governing coalitions would not rely on support from the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a party widely considered to have far-right tendencies. Reichinnek confirmed that the Left party will now determine its course of action in response to this lack of communication.
