Deputy CDU parliamentary group member Sepp Müller, who is involved in the task force addressing high fuel prices, has indicated that targeted, short-term relief measures could be implemented for specific segments of the population. Speaking to the press outlets of Mediengruppe Bayern, Müller stated his readiness to quickly assist those most affected, naming families, commuters, and the middle class as priorities. He suggested that relief could be specifically administered through changes to the vehicle tax for smaller incomes and businesses. Müller urged the federal government to respond quickly and also called for increased intervention by the antitrust authority. He added, “As a part of the task force, we expect the federal government to provide concrete review results regarding our proposals for relief by Friday. Furthermore, the oil conglomerates are ruthlessly profiting from this situation. The president of the antitrust authority must rein in the oil companies; the strengthened laws provide him with all the means to do so”. According to Müller, additional state revenues must be swiftly and precisely returned to those impacted to cushion the price shock. However, he made it clear that relief would not be universal. “It is equally clear, however, that we will not compensate everything at the gas pump. A member of the Bundestag or a Porsche driver does not require relief at the expense of the general public. This money belongs where it is truly needed”.
