Facing continually high prices for oil and gasoline, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag is considering introducing a third “relief package” aimed at car drivers.
Sepp Müller, the deputy parliamentary group chairman for the CDU, told the newspaper “Bild” that if the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues, the government should implement a third package. He indicated that the new focus would be on providing more targeted aid to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), the logistics sector, and commuters. Müller added that they plan to submit concrete measures through a dedicated task force.
According to the report, citing sources within the coalition, discussions are currently underway regarding targeted financial aid for low- and middle-income earners, as well as a hike in the commuter deduction starting in July. However, Müller cautioned against forming unrealistic expectations, stating that “We must also acknowledge the truth: Price normalization will take months, and permanent subsidies funded by tax money are difficult to realize”.
The federal government and Bundestag had previously passed one relief package on April 1st, followed by a second package for drivers on May 1st.
