Union Supports Delayed Rail Modernization Plans, Aiming for Realistic Progress and Reliability

Union members support the new schemes put forth by Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) and Deutsche Bahn, which involve extending the timeline for corridor refurbishments and focusing initial modernization efforts on significantly fewer routes.

Parliamentary deputy Stephan Stracke (CSU) told the “Rheinische Post” that in implementing these corridor renovations, the plans revealed a gap between aspiration and reality, citing the Hamburg-Berlin line as a recent example. He stressed that the entire concept must be continuously evaluated and adapted as necessary.

According to the transport politician, the ultimate objective is success, not disappointment, and the goal is to ensure that rail services run reliably. Stracke insists that construction periods must be planned and adhered to realistically, and that alternative transport solutions must be managed dependably. He argues that extending the period for corridor modernization will allow these operations to function more smoothly going forward, a measure he believes is crucial for the daily commuters who rely on the train.

Despite these refurbishment efforts, the overall requirement for maintenance across Germany’s rail network has continued to rise. Citing documents from DB InfraGO, “Tagesspiegel Background” reported that the investment deficit increased by 6.9 billion euros in 2024 and by 2.6 billion euros in 2025.
