Thomas Röwekamp, chairman of the Defence Committee in the Bundestag and a CDU member, welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump regarding the deployment of an additional 5,000 American soldiers to Poland. Röwekamp told the “Rheinische Post” that the stronger presence of US troops in Poland sends an important signal: the United States continues to uphold its responsibility for deterrence and defense in Europe, and he explicitly welcomes this. Furthermore, he noted that the transfer of troops to Poland could at least partially offset the planned withdrawal of US soldiers from Germany, although the CDU politician stressed that this specific step remains “regrettable” from the German perspective. Despite these developments, Röwekamp stated that it is becoming “increasingly clear” that Europe itself must assume “significantly more responsibility” for its security. This is especially true regarding strategic capabilities and the area of Deep Strike. He affirmed that they intend to take on this “responsibility”.
