A leading figure within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany, Jens Spahn, has cautioned against the possibility of a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Europe. Speaking to “Der Stern” magazine, Spahn, who serves as parliamentary group leader, stated he recently met with U.S. government officials and received clear indications that the continued presence of American forces is not guaranteed. He expressed concern that the potential for abrupt shifts in U.S. policy isn’t fully understood within Germany, calling the situation “alarming.
Spahn reiterated his call for a restructuring of nuclear deterrence within Europe. He emphasized alignment with Chancellor Scholz regarding the need to secure Germany’s reliance on American deterrence, while simultaneously exploring options for a revised framework for nuclear participation across the continent.
Highlighting discussions he held with Stephen A. Feinberg, the U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, Spahn underscored a stated shift in U.S. priorities toward China. He suggested that European nations cannot simply disregard this evolving strategic focus.
In a separate development, Spahn also defended U.S. President Donald Trump against accusations of fascism. He cautioned against hasty labeling and highlighted the U.S. as a country with a robust legal system and traditions of governance, including a separation of powers. While acknowledging criticisms regarding Trump’s challenges to institutions and his treatment of certain segments of society, Spahn pointed to his actions against regimes he deems unjust, such as that of the Iranian leadership, as demonstrating a complex and nuanced position.
