The United States secured their second victory in Group D at the football World Cup, defeating Australia 2-0 in Seattle on Friday.
The match started with a setback for the hosts, as Australia took the early lead in the 11th minute. After a sharp delivery from Folarin Balogun, Cameron Burgess headed the ball into his own net.
Under the guidance of coach Mauricio Pochettino, the US team controlled the momentum for large portions of the game, restricting the Socceroos’ opportunities. Although the American squad lacked consistent finishing without the injured Christian Pulisic, they were the clear dominant side.
The hosts eventually extended their lead just before halftime. Following a blocked free-kick, Alex Freeman reacted quickest in the 43rd minute, powering a header into the net. Although the goal was initially disallowed for offside, the video assistant subsequently confirmed its validity.
After the break, Australia looked improved, with Nestory Irankunda’s introduction adding pace to their attack. Cristian Volpato registered the best chance for the visitors in the 62nd minute, but his shot sailed well over the goal. However, the United States defended their advantage soundly, preventing any genuine comeback attempt by Australia.
This second win in their second group game gives the co-hosts a strong prospect of qualifying for the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Australia, currently sitting in second place in Group D, faces significant pressure in their final group fixture.
