VATM Warns Deutsche Telekom’s Fiber Expansion Risks Re‑Monopolising Germany’s Telecom Market

The telecommunications association VATM has warned that Deutsche Telekom’s growing dominance in the fibre‑optic market could become harmful. “Re‑monopolisation is not a goal for the country or its consumers” said Valentina Daiber, VATM president, to the German editorial network. She pointed out that Germany’s situation differs from other countries, where former state monopolists have seen their market share shrink and competitors gain strength. In contrast, Deutsche Telekom is actively increasing its share in the fibre sector.

Daiber emphasized that VATM aims to strengthen voluntary collaborations for the joint marketing of fibre networks. Yet recent figures show that alternative providers struggle to access Deutsche Telekom’s fibre infrastructure, and that the Bonn‑based company itself has little interest in using competitors’ new networks to supply its customers.

On Monday, the Federal Ministry of Digital and the Economy presented a draft amendment to the Telecommunications Act. Its main goal is to accelerate nationwide fibre roll‑out. “The key now is to invigorate competition without limiting its potential. Only clear rules and fair market opportunities can generate the billions‑of‑euros investment required” Daiber said.
