A growing chorus of concern is being voiced within Germany’s Left party regarding escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela, with prominent figures warning of potential American military intervention. In a statement released this week, Left party co-leaders Jan van Aken and Sören Pellmann accused the US government of harboring ambitions to seize control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves.
Van Aken asserted that the Trump administration’s actions are driven by a desire for direct access to these resources, arguing that even criticism of the Maduro regime shouldn’t justify military action. “We can rightfully condemn the authoritarian nature of the Maduro government, but that should not pave the way for a war over crucial resources” he stated.
The concerns extend beyond Venezuela itself. Pellmann highlighted the US government’s recent interference in Honduran elections, alongside unsubstantiated allegations leveled against the left-leaning president of Colombia, suggesting a broader strategy to reshape the region according to American interests. This behavior indicates, according to the Left party, that Washington’s focus is not limited to Venezuela but involves a regional reordering agenda.
Pellmann expressed fears of an imminent military assault aimed at overthrowing the Venezuelan government, calling on the German government to act decisively. He demanded a swift condemnation of the US actions, mediation through the United Nations and the implementation of consequences against the United States. Further emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Pellmann pointed to the significant volume of German arms exports to the US-the fourth largest recipient last year-and urged the immediate imposition of a ban on arms exports to the US as a demonstration of Germany’s adherence to international law. The proposed ban represents a significant escalation in German political discourse and signals a potential challenge to the transatlantic alliance should it be implemented.
