Frank Werneke, the chairman of the services union Verdi, has criticized the planned measures intended to regulate fuel prices. He told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that it might take several months before a fuel price cap is implemented. Werneke criticized the current situation, stating, “Until then, the oil conglomerates will continue to earn huge profits. No one is challenging their excess earnings; instead, the fuel discount is being absorbed by the taxpayers.”
While he acknowledged and approved of the government taking some action, the union leader expressed a preference for a solution that was not a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Instead, he advocated for targeted support specifically aimed at consumers with lower to middle incomes. He concluded his remarks by stating that the fact that the necessary payout mechanism for this support is not yet finalized is unacceptable.
