Veteran Journalist Urges Strict Social Media Regulation Amid Concerns Over Digital Overuse

Veteran “Tagesthemen” moderator Ulrich Wickert advocates for strict regulation of social media, questioning its relevance to his own life. Wickert told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” that unchecked use of social media is detrimental to both individuals and society.

The 83-year-old journalist added that he does not use Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, and he does not miss this form of communication. However, he does appreciate using online media libraries for timely information. He explained his habits, stating, “When we are having dinner, I put my phone away, especially when the “Tagesschau” is on. Alternatively, I watch the previous night’s “Tagesthemen” broadcast whenever I like”.

Wichert also criticized parents who use digital devices to keep very young children quiet. He described seeing parents place an iPad in front of a toddler in a restaurant just to maintain peace as something deplorable. He maintained that he is strict as a father, imposing restrictive access to social media channels for his 14-year-old children.
