Von der Leyen Defends Package

The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has advocated for the recently proposed sanctions package targeting Israel and leading members of Hamas. In an interview with the Leading European Newspaper Alliance (LENA), she expressed concern over actions perceived as undermining the viability of a two-state solution.

Von der Leyen cited specific examples, including “plans for a settlement project in the so-called E-1 area” which she stated would “effectively sever the occupied West Bank from East Jerusalem”. She explained that the Commission felt compelled to act, proposing a package of targeted and proportionate measures aimed at facilitating a path forward.

The President underscored the urgent need for the unconditional release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas, emphasized the importance of unfettered humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip and called for an immediate ceasefire.

Looking ahead, von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable pathway towards long-term regional stability. She highlighted the necessity of a secure Israel, a functioning Palestinian Authority, the curtailment of extremism and the eradication of Hamas.
