Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) expressed hope for a “new chapter” in relations with Hungary. Speaking before his departure for Budapest on Monday, he noted, “After nearly seven years, I am the first German Foreign Minister to travel to Hungary again,” adding that this situation demonstrated “how much we have to make up for.”
While acknowledging that the political shift in Hungary represents an opportunity, Wadephul expressed confidence that relations could be quickly rebuilt “on a foundation of mutual trust and reliability.” He hopes that Hungary will rediscover its “great European heart,” and that the rest of Europe will feel this change.
Wadephul further commented that the new Hungarian government has initiated crucial reforms in a short timeframe. He views the return to the rule of law and the implementation of European standards as positive news for the continent and particularly for the people of Hungary. According to him, a robust legal framework and predictable regulations are essential for citizens to trust their government and for companies to commit to investment.
Highlighting the economic impact, the minister stated that German businesses are already responsible for 250,000 jobs in Hungary. He welcomed the accompanying delegation of German companies, noting that they would use the trip to specifically discuss which further steps are necessary.
