After the United States partially lifted sanctions on Russian oil, Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of BSW, urged the German federal government to resume buying oil from Russia. ”Whenever the United States is purchasing Russian oil-which is far less dependent on other sources because of its own production-Germany should do the same at the earliest opportunity” Wagenknecht told the newspapers of the Funke‑Media group in the Saturday edition.
She criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) for “criticising this decision while citizens are desperate at the petrol stations”. According to her, it is “the cold arrogance of a multimillionaire who does not face such worries”. Wagenknecht added that Germany should once again import Russian oil at Schwedt and introduce a fuel‑price cap of €1.50 per litre.
The federal government must, she demands, lower the value‑added tax to 7 percent, abolish the CO₂‑tax, reduce the energy tax, and prevent the “shameless profiteering” of petroleum companies. Only then could fuel prices comfortably be capped at €1.50 per litre, she said the maximum price should never be exceeded. Currently, prices are above €2.00 per litre.
