Wagenknecht Questions European & Ukraine Commitment to Peace

Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the BSW party, has expressed skepticism regarding the commitment to peace among European allies and the Ukrainian President following a recent summit in Washington.

Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”, Wagenknecht suggested substantial doubts remain as to whether the “coalition of the unwilling” in Europe and President Zelenskyy, are genuinely seeking a resolution to the conflict. She argued that the willingness to compromise from Zelenskyy, along with prominent German political figures, remains minimal. She asserted that the insistence on maximal demands, such as a ceasefire as a precondition for negotiations, complicates the path to a genuine peace and prolongs the fighting.

The BSW founder described the meeting held with US President Trump in Washington as a “summit of quiet hope – and not because of, but despite, the Europeans”. Wagenknecht welcomed the prospect of a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian Presidents, stating that should Putin be open to a bilateral meeting with Zelenskyy, it would represent a positive signal.

Looking ahead to future gatherings aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, Wagenknecht called for the inclusion of countries such as Brazil, South Africa, China and India, emphasizing that these nations have long been seriously committed to mediation and a peaceful outcome. She stated that the question of security guarantees cannot be resolved without their involvement. Wagenknecht further asserted that the deployment of Bundeswehr or other NATO troops in Ukraine is not a path to peace, advocating instead for guarantees provided by neutral states.
