Wagenknecht Slams Coalition Tax Reform as “Electoral Farce,” Demands Government Overhaul

Sahra Wagenknecht, a politician from the BSW, sharply criticized the tax reform plans put forth by the center-right coalition leadership, labeling them a “mockery of the public.”

Speaking to the “Welt,” she criticized the projected €600 in alleged tax relief, stating that €312 of that amount was included in child benefit. Wagenknecht argued that characterizing a family benefit-whose increase was overdue given the rising cost of living-as a tax reduction amounts to deceiving the populace.

She also dismissed other proposed measures, such as raising the tax-free allowance, as inevitable. “The families will spend more at the gas station during these summer holidays alone in additional costs than they will ever be tax-relieved by Merz and Klingbeil in the future,” Wagenknecht declared, referring to Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD).

Furthermore, Wagenknecht strongly criticized the government’s handling of the economy and energy costs. “The fact that nothing is happening in those areas is a blatant failure of government,” she said. She concluded by demanding a “new Bundestrainer”-a metaphorical change in leadership-adding that a shake-up in the Chancellery was even more urgently required.
