Was a Landslide to Blame?

Investigations into the cause of the deadly train accident near Riedlingen, Baden-Württemberg, are intensifying. Authorities reported on Monday that a landslide is suspected as a primary factor.

According to police statements, heavy rainfall in the area likely caused an overflow of a drainage shaft. This overflow subsequently triggered a landslide on the embankment leading to the railway tracks, which is believed to have resulted in the train derailing. Currently, there is no indication of external interference.

The accident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including the train’s driver and another railway employee. The third fatality was a passenger traveling on the train. At least 41 people sustained injuries, some of whom are seriously hurt. Rescue services transported the injured to neighboring hospitals. The site of the accident remains cordoned off and train services are currently suspended.
