Werder Bremen has decided to part ways with head coach Horst Steffen. After a tense 1‑1 draw at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the club announced on Sunday that Steffen would be dismissed with immediate effect, following intensive discussions. The match represented the tenth consecutive Bundesliga outing in which Werder failed to secure a victory.
Club chief executive Clemens Fritz explained that the decision was difficult but necessary. “We no longer believe that Horst can reverse the long winless streak together with the squad” he said. “It is the result of a thorough analysis of our sporting situation and our recent conversations, which is why we have chosen to release him”.
Interim coaches Raphael Duarte and Christian Groß will take charge of the team while the club actively searches for a new head coach. “We are looking extensively for a suitable successor and will take the necessary time to find the best solution for Werder” Fritz added.
Steffen arrived from SV Elversberg in the summer and has overseen 20 Bundesliga matches, compiling a record of four wins, seven draws, and nine losses. The team has slipped to 15th place in the league table.
