Werder Bremen Stunned by Freiburg in Bundesliga Rout

SV Werder Bremen suffered a 3-0 defeat against SC Freiburg at the Weserstadion on Sunday in a Bundesliga matchday four encounter.

The home side demonstrated initial attacking intent but also displayed vulnerabilities, with Freiburg consistently posing a threat. Direct scoring opportunities were scarce for both teams throughout the first half.

The deadlock was broken in the 31st minute when a penalty was awarded to Freiburg after Puertas inadvertently handled the ball, following a slight push from Eggestein. After a VAR review, referee Timo Gerach pointed to the spot and Grifo confidently converted, placing the shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Backhaus.

Grifo narrowly missed extending the lead just before halftime, his strike hitting the crossbar. The first half concluded with Freiburg holding a deserved one-goal advantage.

Following the restart, Freiburg increased their lead as Adamu outpaced Friedl after a Grifo pass, slotting the ball past Backhaus in the 54th minute. Werder Bremen had a chance to reduce the deficit when a handball was called against Makengo inside the penalty area. However, Schmid’s subsequent penalty in the 59th minute was saved by Freiburg’s goalkeeper, Atubolu.

The scoreline was further extended in the 75th minute when Coulibaly unfortunately diverted the ball into his own net while attempting to defend against Scherhant, whom Backhaus had previously managed to deny. Werder Bremen struggled to recover momentum.

Höler almost added a fourth for Freiburg in the additional time, but was thwarted by Backhaus. The result secures three points for Freiburg’s side.

The victory propels Freiburg to sixth place in the Bundesliga standings, while Bremen currently occupies 13th position.

Elsewhere in the league, Augsburg lost 4-1 to Mainz, Hoffenheim succumbed to a 4-1 defeat against Bayern Munich and HSV secured a 2-1 victory over Heidenheim.
