A leading European Parliament member is advocating for a re-evaluation of international partnerships and a broadening of the concept of the “West”. Sergey Lagodinsky, a Green Party representative, warned that the collective strength of democratic nations is being tested by a shifting global landscape. He expressed concern that a failure to maintain unity within the Western sphere could lead to a world dominated by power politics, echoing promises previously made by Russia and sought by China.
Lagodinsky argued for a departure from traditional geographic definitions of the West, emphasizing the importance of shared values. He suggested exploring novel alliances, proposing that discussions should consider possibilities such as Canada joining the European Union, despite its seeming unconventional nature. Furthermore, he indicated the potential for collaboration with Southern Hemisphere nations like Australia, as well as building partnerships with East Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan.
The Green Party politician believes that upholding shared values requires a pragmatic approach, including the strategic use of power to safeguard them. He called for a serious and ongoing debate about the future configuration of alliances and partnerships to meet the challenges of a multipolar world.
