A Berlin court has ruled in favor of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in a dispute with their landlord, dismissing a request for eviction from the party’s federal headquarters. The regional court deemed the expedited termination of the lease unjustified.
Despite the victory in this particular legal challenge, the AfD will still be required to vacate the premises next year. The landlord had previously issued a standard termination notice, which remains in effect.
Kay Gottschalk, deputy leader of the AfD, commented on the verdict, stating the case highlighted the importance of protecting legal resources and cautioned against using courts as arenas for political conflict. He emphasized that political debate should occur within the parliamentary process, not within the courtroom setting.
Looking ahead, the AfD intends to secure new property next year, with the long-term goal of owning the building outright. According to Carsten Hütter, the party’s federal treasurer, this acquisition will strategically position the headquarters, improving its geographic and structural advantages.
