Why US Concessions to Iran Could Threaten Global Stability and Challenge Russia

CDU foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen has warned the United States against making concessions to Iran. According to the deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Röttgen stated that he is strongly opposed to any deal that would leave the US in a strategically weaker position than it currently occupies.

As an example of the current situation, Röttgen cited potential regime control over the Strait of Hormuz. He highlighted that the US has found effective ways-such as implementing a counter-blockade of Iranian ports-to place massive economic pressure on the regime. He concluded that the conflict is now a test of endurance, and the US is better equipped to sustain the effort.

Röttgen also shared the expectation that the war in Iran will negatively impact Russia more significantly than Ukraine. He suggested that higher oil prices will successfully offset any reduction in Russian oil production. Furthermore, the global community, he argued, is learning that Russia is not a reliable partner capable of providing necessary assistance to its allies during a true crisis.

Regarding global power dynamics, Röttgen pointed out that President Donald Trump’s intense focus on Iran effectively diverts attention away from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The German politician viewed Putin as being in a strategic dilemma, hoping to maintain neutrality and avoid conflict with any major parties, including the US, Iran, the Gulf states, and Israel.
