Wulff Slams Merz Government, Calls for “Real Restart

The outgoing year demands a fundamental shift in direction for the German government, according to former Federal President Christian Wulff, who has launched a scathing critique of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s administration. In an interview with “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, Wulff argued that current policies are unsustainable and necessitate a “genuine restart.

Wulff’s remarks represent a significant challenge to Merz’s leadership, particularly his approach to crisis management. He dismissed the tendency within the government to attribute setbacks to external factors such as the war in Ukraine or American trade policies, asserting, “It’s useless to just complain about circumstances; the decisive question is: How do we react?” He directly challenged Merz, stating, “I can’t just describe the problems when I’m in the driver’s seat. When I’m in the driver’s seat, I must drive.

The former president called for a more ambitious agenda from the governing coalition. He emphasized the need for a rapid consensus and consistent implementation of policies, coupled with improved communication. Wulff suggested a willingness from the government to demonstrate austerity, proposing reductions in ministerial departments and government spending, arguing that such symbolic actions are crucial to garnering public support and acceptance of potential sacrifices. “People need a promise” he stated, “and then they are also willing to make sacrifices.

Beyond economic concerns, Wulff also addressed the increasingly divisive debate surrounding migration. He criticized the failure to recognize the potential benefits – both economic and societal – of immigration and a diverse population. Pointing to the untapped potential of Syrian professionals and individuals affected by conflicts in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine, he proposed a strategy of facilitating their contributions to their home countries, which he believes could simultaneously boost the German economy and foster international reconstruction. “Many clever Syrians live with us. If we facilitate their return, they can rebuild their country of origin, to the benefit of the German economy.

Finally, Wulff reflected on his own tumultuous departure from the Federal Presidency in 2012. While describing the period as a “nightmare” he underscored the potential for growth and clarity that emerges from times of crisis. He emphasized the importance of genuine friendship and the resilience gained through adversity, offering a personal reflection on leadership and the enduring value of unwavering support. His intervention injects a new layer of scrutiny into the current political climate and poses a direct challenge for Chancellor Merz to demonstrate decisive leadership.
