WWII Bomb Discovered in Berlin, Evacuation Underway

A World War II-era bomb has been unearthed in the heart of the capital city, triggering a late-night evacuation of a significant area. Authorities announced the discovery near the Mühlendammbrücke during routine clearance work in the Spree River shortly before midnight.

The affected zone primarily encompasses the area south of Museum Island, known as the “Fischerinsel” but also includes the residential district situated between the Spree Canal and Heinrich-Heine-Straße and the area between the Spree and the Rotes Rathaus.

Due to the immediate danger posed by the unexploded ordnance, an evacuation of all houses, buildings and roadways within the designated security perimeter was deemed necessary. Residents are being urgently instructed to leave the area.

Remaining within the perimeter places individuals at risk and officials have indicated that the security measures are expected to remain in place for several hours. A temporary emergency shelter has been established at the Rathaus Mitte, located at Karl-Marx-Allee 31.
