The Social Democratic Youth Association (Juso) has issued a strong call for the SPD to significantly prioritize the concerns and aspirations of younger generations. Philipp Türmer, the current Juso chairman, voiced his concerns to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, stating that the SPD’s standing among young voters is “extremely worrying.
He pointed to the results of the last federal election as evidence of this disconnect, observing that many young people find it difficult to associate the SPD with their own perspectives. Türmer emphasized that without the active engagement and support of younger citizens, the party’s long-term viability is at risk.
To address this, Türmer advocates for a comprehensive review and overhaul of the party’s core principles. As the SPD prepares to adopt a new foundational program by 2027, he insists that the viewpoints, demands and frustrations of young people must be central to the drafting process. Türmer proposed a rigorous assessment of every proposed statement, specifically evaluating its impact and relevance to younger citizens. This, he believes, is crucial to demonstrate that the SPD is actively listening, understanding and championing the needs of this vital demographic.
