Granit Xhaka has departed Bayer 04 Leverkusen to join English Premier League newcomers AFC Sunderland, the Bundesliga club announced on Wednesday.
The move, effective immediately, follows an agreement between the two clubs regarding transfer conditions, which Leverkusen accepted. Xhaka, who was contracted to Leverkusen until 2028, has been granted an early release.
“Granit Xhaka was a defining player in the Leverkusen team that achieved the historic double of Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles in 2024 since his arrival two years ago” stated Bayer 04 Sporting Director Simon Rolfes. “Granting his request for a transfer, under the negotiated terms and circumstances, is the most viable and positive solution for Bayer 04 and all parties involved”.
