Kiesewetter Slams Germany’s Middle East Policy

The release of deeply disturbing videos depicting emaciated Israeli hostages held in Gaza has prompted strong reactions and renewed scrutiny of Germany’s approach to the ongoing conflict. Several prominent German politicians have voiced concerns regarding the situation and questioned the current government’s policy.

Roderich Kiesewetter, spokesperson for the CDU/CSU faction on the Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized the German government’s approach, alleging it is susceptible to the Hamas’s propaganda and promoting a reversal of responsibility. He argued for unwavering support for Israel and urged efforts to debunk pro-Palestinian narratives in Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Kiesewetter contends Hamas aims to destroy Israel and holds innocent hostages captive, accusing Germany of failing to recognize this intent, particularly attributing support from Iran. He questioned the logic of humanitarian aid reaching Gaza potentially being diverted to Hamas and suggested a German initiative to disarm the organization, involving Arab states opposed to Hamas, would be more constructive than criticizing Israeli actions. He believes a viable future for Gaza is contingent on Hamas’s complete dismantling.

The SPD faction echoed calls for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages, condemning what they described as Hamas’s exploitation of both the population and hostages and their use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes. They emphasized the continued goal of a negotiated two-state solution, with potential recognition of a Palestinian state as a step towards achieving this goal, contingent on its contribution to a peaceful resolution. A reformed Palestinian Authority, independent of Hamas, is seen as essential for civilian administration in Gaza.

Omid Nouripour, Green Party foreign policy spokesperson, emphasized the primary responsibility of Hamas for the dire situation in Gaza and warned against neglecting the hostages’ plight amidst criticism of the Netanyahu government.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, FDP’s European policy representative, suggested the video’s release is a deliberate attempt by Hamas to obstruct a ceasefire. She called for increased pressure from Arab nations on Hamas, including those that have recently signed peace agreements with Israel, urging them to end the conflict and release the 59 remaining hostages. Strack-Zimmermann believes that only through such pressure can there be a chance for lasting peace and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
