Faced with the possibility of arson accelerating the wildfires in Germany, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is advocating for a tightening of criminal penalties. According to SPD parliamentary spokesperson Dirk Wiese, the party needs a strong focus on coordinated wildfire prevention involving the federal government, the states, and local municipalities. This strategy must include widespread construction of firebreaks in high-risk zones, along with raising the statutory penalties for both intentional and negligent arson.
This push comes after NRW Agriculture Minister Silke Großen (CDU) suggested that there are indications of arson following the large forest fire in the Hürtgenwald. Currently, intentional arson can be punished with at least one year in prison, while negligent acts may result in fines.
