The synod chair of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Bishop Kirsten Fehrs, has issued a stark warning against the use of nuclear weapons, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Speaking on Monday, Bishop Fehrs emphasized the enduring power of the images emerging from the devastated cities, stating that they serve as a continuing imperative. She asserted the inherent ethical unacceptability of nuclear weapons, highlighting their capacity to inflict mass, long-lasting and devastating violence.
Acknowledging the increased emphasis on nuclear deterrence as a security measure in the context of current geopolitical tensions and threats involving nuclear use, Bishop Fehrs stressed the urgent need to actively prevent any recurrence of such events. She reiterated the Church’s ongoing commitment to the pursuit of a world free of nuclear weapons.
