Relief for Consumers?

Government coalition representatives are pushing for a potential reduction in electricity taxes for all consumers during ongoing budget negotiations. Sepp Müller, parliamentary group vice-chairman of the CDU, stated to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers that the possibility of a broad-based reduction remains viable. He suggested that a one percent savings potential could be realized within a federal budget of 500 billion euros.

The proposal is rooted in the coalition agreement and was a pledge made by all three governing parties during the election campaign. Müller emphasized that if financial leeway becomes available, implementation is warranted.

Nina Scheer, the SPD’s spokesperson for energy policy, echoed this sentiment, reiterating that the coalition agreement stipulates an immediate and universal reduction in electricity taxes to the minimum level required by European law. She asserted that this should be implemented and cannot be replaced by the planned relief measures concerning grid fees, but rather serves as a complementary approach.

Scheer underlined that such measures were part of the governing parties’ program and cautioned against providing relief solely to natural gas consumers through the absorption of the gas storage levy, arguing it would be counterproductive to the broader energy transition efforts. While a reduction in electricity taxes for private consumers has been previously excluded, the coalition intends to alleviate the burden on gas customers.
