The leader of the Jusos, the youth wing of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), Philipp Türmer, has refuted proposals from the conservative bloc (CDU/CSU) to amend conscription law in a way that would automatically trigger mandatory military service should the Bundeswehr fail to attract sufficient volunteers. In interviews with RTL and ntv television networks, Türmer stated, “We are against compulsory elements and we also oppose provisions in the law that could reactivate conscription.
Türmer emphasized the importance of preventing the inclusion of any loopholes in the legislation that could lead to a return to mandatory service. “We need a clear decision now and that decision must be that we rely on voluntarism” he said.
Regarding deterrence against potential Russian aggression towards NATO territory, Türmer argued that a highly skilled force of professional and volunteer soldiers is essential. “This is not achieved through conscription, but through more attractive conditions” he explained. He noted that most major European nations operate on a volunteer basis, adding that the practical implications of annually drafting 700,000 young men would be excessive.
