With escalating attacks on substations across Germany, coupled with a nearly successful drone strike at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Cem Özdemir, the Green politician, is demanding stronger protections for critical infrastructure. Speaking to newspapers from the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland,” he stated that “security requirements have dramatically changed.”
Whether the attacks originate from “far-left radicals or from Putin’s proxy agents,” Özdemir emphasized that Germany remains vulnerable. He warned that adversaries are exploiting these weak points to spread uncertainty. Consequently, while he stressed the importance of not succumbing to panic, he added that the protection of critical infrastructure-through video surveillance, fencing, and other measures-must now be fast-tracked with high urgency.
Özdemir referenced similar incidents in other regions, noting that a comparable event occurred in Reutlingen. Although the state was able to limit the damage from that prior incident, he stressed that all federal states must highly prioritize this issue and collaborate closely. The Reutlingen event, which took place in early June, had temporarily interrupted power supply to 7,600 households.
