Iran Sanctions: German Parties Divided on Approach

A leading German politician has voiced support for a potential escalation of sanctions against Iran, while another expressed significant concern over the implications for regional stability.

Norbert Röttgen, a foreign policy spokesperson for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), stated that comprehensive sanctions could be implemented within 30 days if the Iranian government does not alter its current course. He justified this position following Iran’s refusal to allow inspections of its nuclear facilities, deeming it a necessary response.

Ralf Stegner, a foreign policy representative of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), took a more cautious stance. He expressed worry that the situation in Iran is becoming increasingly dangerous due to setbacks in nuclear negotiations and the potential reinstatement of stricter sanctions. Stegner emphasized the broader context of existing international crises and conflicts, arguing that diplomatic efforts and increased humanitarian aid are urgently needed rather than escalating tensions and reducing support. He suggested that current global developments demonstrate a concerning drift away from international cooperation.
