Why German Students Travel Farther Than Workers

Approximately 16 percent of students regularly spend an hour or more each way traveling from their residence to university, compared to just 6 percent of commuting professionals Furthermore, over a quarter (27 percent) of students require more than 30 minutes for their journey, but less than an hour The majority of students – 43 percent – commute between ten and thirty minutes Only 14 percent have a commute of under ten minutes

The data also highlights the considerable distances some students travel Over a quarter (28 percent) report a commute of 25 kilometers or more, with 14 percent requiring 50 kilometers or more for a one-way trip Another 14 percent travel between 25 and 50 kilometers A significant portion – 18 percent – commute between 10 and 25 kilometers, while 20 percent travel 5 to 10 kilometers Conversely, almost a third (34 percent) of students have a relatively short commute, with their university less than 5 kilometers from home

Public transportation is the predominant mode of travel for students, with 53 percent utilizing buses and trains This is a markedly higher proportion compared to the 16 percent of commuting professionals who rely on public transport Cars account for the second most popular method among students, at 22 percent, followed by bicycles (15 percent) and walking (9 percent)
