A recent survey conducted by Bitkom Research indicates strong German openness to autonomous transportation across various modes. The study, based on a telephone survey of 1,004 individuals aged 16 and over in Germany (including 736 with at least one vehicle in their household), reveals a potential for widespread adoption.

The survey found that a considerable majority of Germans express willingness to utilize autonomous vehicles. Approximately 72% would use an autonomous subway or commuter train, 70% would board an autonomous bus and 68% would opt for an autonomous mini or shuttle bus. Interest extends to private transportation, with 57% indicating readiness to use an autonomous private car and 56% expressing openness to autonomous taxis. Even longer-distance travel shows potential, as 44% would consider an autonomous regional or intercity train, 34% would utilize an autonomous ship and 27% would board an autonomous aircraft.

However, perspectives on the long-term future of autonomous driving are more divided. While 53% believe it will eventually become the standard, 43% view it as an overhyped trend that will soon fade.

Overall, 86% of Germans perceive digitalization as an opportunity for improved mobility. This underscores the importance of digital innovation for Germany’s automotive industry, with 78% of respondents convinced that it’s essential for remaining competitive. Collaboration with technology companies is also seen as indispensable for success in the international market, with 77% agreeing. Interestingly, half of those surveyed (50%) suggest that the German automotive sector should refocus on its traditional strengths.

The survey was conducted between July 8th and July 12th, 2025.
