Ex-Commander Warns of Russian Probes

Retired U.S. General Ben Hodges has characterized the recent incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace as a deliberate test of NATO’s defensive capabilities. Speaking to Bild, Hodges stated he believes the incident was not accidental, but rather a calculated probe designed to evaluate NATO’s responsiveness and radar effectiveness.

Hodges emphasized that Russia is assessing NATO’s ability to provide early warnings and its speed in reacting to such events, examining the defensive systems in place. He expressed concern over the defensive response, specifically highlighting the deployment of F-22 and F-35 fighter jets to intercept the drones, suggesting a lack of preparedness. He drew a comparison to Ukraine’s experience with drone attacks, suggesting the use of advanced fighter jets in such scenarios represents a disproportionate and wasteful use of resources, asserting that alternative, more economical methods would be preferable.

The former commander of U.S. forces in Europe interpreted Russia’s actions as a deliberate escalation of tensions and a demonstration of a lack of respect for NATO and, specifically, for U.S. President Trump. He suggested Russia may be emboldened by a perceived lack of response from the U.S., encouraging further escalatory behavior.

Hodges also criticized European nations for their past response to similar airspace violations, accusing them of failing to consistently intercept Russian drones that have previously breached NATO airspace.
