Diakonie Deutschland fears that the reform of child and youth welfare could result in setbacks for inclusion.
Diakonie President Rüdiger Schuch told the “Rheinische Post” that during any austerity measures, people must not be ignored, asserting that inclusion is not a luxury but a fundamental human right. He emphasized that in cases such as individualized school support, the basis for decisions must be the child’s needs, not the financial state of the institution. The organization is concerned that the new legislation will lead to regression because blanket cuts are being implemented against those already facing the greatest difficulties.
Schuch further stated that in a democratic and free society, every individual has a right to participate and determine their own life. He stressed that this inherent common sense must be something society values.
