Following the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace on Wednesday, prominent foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen (CDU) is calling for the acquisition of counter-drone technology.
Speaking to RTL and ntv on Thursday, Röttgen stated it was “undisputed” that the German armed forces (Bundeswehr) are not adequately equipped to address such threats. He emphasized that the incident served as a critical learning opportunity for Germany.
Röttgen stressed the need for accelerated action. “We require counter-drone systems to respond to such attacks and this must happen quickly” he said. He further highlighted ambiguities within the existing legal framework, pointing out the need for clarity regarding responsibilities, appropriate responses and decision-making processes in similar situations. He called for establishing a clear legal basis to enable swift and decisive action.
