Poland Calls for No-Fly Zone Amid Ukraine Drone Attacks

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has proposed considering a more proactive approach by Western nations regarding the interception of Russian drones and missiles, particularly within Ukrainian airspace. Addressing the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Sikorski acknowledged the technical capability of NATO and EU members to implement such measures, emphasizing that any decision would require consensus among allies. He clarified that the suggestion represents a personal reflection, not a unilateral declaration by Poland.

Beyond aerial interception, Sikorski has also advocated for a coordinated response to what he describes as Russia’s “shadow fleet” operating in the Baltic Sea. He proposed the establishment of a maritime control zone in the North Sea, potentially led by Germany or NATO, to restrict the entry of these vessels into the Baltic. Sikorski expressed serious concerns about the potential for significant environmental catastrophe should one of these ships, mirroring the fate of two previously sunk in the Sea of Azov, encounter a similar incident in the Baltic. He highlighted the scale of damage an environmental disaster of this nature would represent.
