Concerns have been raised within German political circles regarding a proposal by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) to engage in direct talks with Afghan representatives to facilitate deportations. SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf voiced skepticism about the initiative, highlighting a perceived contradiction within the governing coalition’s stance.
Klüssendorf, speaking to RTL and ntv, acknowledged the coalition’s commitment to deporting individuals with criminal records and subject to deportation. However, he cautioned that direct engagement with the Taliban regime appears to conflict with the established policy of avoiding contact with such entities to prevent their international legitimization.
The SPD politician emphasized the current practice of utilizing intermediaries and third-party states to manage deportations. He suggested a re-evaluation of the proposed direct talks, articulating reservations about establishing a direct channel of communication with the Taliban. Klüssendorf believes a more considered approach is needed to navigate the complex challenges of deportation procedures while maintaining adherence to broader foreign policy objectives.
