Consumer Advocates Issue Warning

Consumer advocates have voiced concerns regarding a proposed policy change by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The ministry, led by Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU), announced plans on Monday to eliminate the fixed feed-in tariff for new photovoltaic (PV) installations.

Ramona Pop, Chair of the German Association of Consumer Organizations (Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband), expressed reservations about the proposal, stating that private households currently contribute significantly to Germany’s energy transition through rooftop solar systems. Instead of abolishing the established feed-in tariff, she advocates for its evolution and modernization.

Pop emphasized the importance of ensuring the energy transition remains economically accessible for consumers. Referring to a recent monitoring report released by the ministry, she highlighted the potential for adjustments to enhance cost-effectiveness. Pop urged the federal government and the Federal Network Agency to establish suitable frameworks for better aligning electricity generation and demand. The aim, she said, should be a consumer-friendly approach to achieving Germany’s ambitious energy goals.
