Pension Reform Warning: Expert Says Separating Early Retirement Jeopardizes Entire Package

Jörg Rocholl, a member of the Pension Commission, issued a strong caution to both the Union and the SPD, warning them against removing the measure to abolish the “Pension at 63” from the comprehensive package of planned pension reform. Rocholl told the “Rheinische Post” that the commission has consistently emphasized that its recommendations are not a buffet from which policymakers can selectively pick and choose items. He explained that the reform package’s strength lies in the way the individual proposals interact with one another. Furthermore, he stressed that anyone opposing the abolition of the “Pension at 63” must recognize that such a move would jeopardize other crucial measures, such as the introduction of capital funding. In sum, Rocholl, who is also the president of the private college ESMT in Berlin, concluded that tinkering with any single recommendation risks endangering the entire package.
