Berlin’s judicial administration is preparing to equip its approximately 270 enforcement officers with bulletproof and stab-resistant protective vests. The move, reported by RBB based on judicial sources, is a response to a growing number of verbal and physical attacks against these officials while performing their duties.
Justizsenatorin Felor Badenberg is overseeing the procurement process, which is underway despite the city’s current budgetary constraints. The cost per vest set is estimated at €1,050. According to the Association of Berlin Higher Enforcement Officers, 222 of the 270 enforcement officers currently operating in the capital have indicated a need for protective gear, resulting in a total cost of approximately €276,000.
Martin Graetz, Chairman of the Association of Berlin Higher Enforcement Officers, anticipates the order will be placed later this year, with delivery of the vests expected to commence in early 2026. Graetz highlighted a concerning trend of increasing insecurity for enforcement officers in recent years, citing a rise in aggression and frustration expressed by citizens. He expressed hope that this measure, along with others, will contribute to enhanced safety within the enforcement service.
Data from the Association of Berlin Higher Enforcement Officers reveals that enforcement officers in Berlin collected around €57 million in debts from debtors in 2023. This figure represents an increase from the €37.3 million collected in 2022 and the €40.2 million in 2021.
