Ahead of the cabinet discussions taking place in Neuhardenberg, Brandenburg, the Green Party is demanding swift government decisions to improve heat protection measures. Simultaneously, they are accusing the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of hypocrisy in the climate protection debate.
In a policy paper reported by “Der Spiegel”, Julia Verlinden, the Deputy Chair of the Green Parliamentary Group, asserts that there is a widening gulf between the SPD’s rhetoric and its actual actions, a gap she claims is even larger than Germany’s current climate protection deficit. Verlinden argues that it is inexplicable why SPD ministers presented a “kind of election platform for heat protection” via an action plan, rather than implementing effective climate adaptation and heat protection measures as part of the governing coalition.
The Green politician criticized SPD cabinet members for calling for increased funding for programs that the party had recently cut or refused to boost. As examples of this discrepancy, Verlinden cites the 86 per cent proportional cut to the funding guideline for “Climate adaptation in social facilities” in the 2027 federal budget, as well as the reduction of a historically oversubscribed program aimed at “Adapting urban and rural areas to climate change.” Furthermore, the black-red coalition reportedly rejected the Greens’ demand that five billion euros be allocated from the special fund to safeguard cities against extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall.
Verlinden criticizes the SPD, stating that by merely issuing a demand paper, they are attempting to cover up years of inaction, announcing they will hastily grab a few buckets while simultaneously agreeing with the Union on new laws that accelerate fire risks. She insists that if the SPD is serious about heat protection and climate adaptation, they must eliminate the root causes of the heat and drought crises. The Green politician demands that emissions must urgently fall faster so that the climate does not continue to warm up. She concludes by telling the Social Democrats that they must act consistently as part of the government and immediately end their failed anti-climate change course.
