Tennet Urges Faster Power Plant Strategy

Transmission grid operator Tennet has urged for accelerated progress following the release of the latest Energy Transition Monitoring report.

Tim Meyerjürgens, CEO of Tennet, emphasized the crucial need for swift political decisions and legislative frameworks, stating that the timely creation of a power plant strategy, a revision of the grid connection system for storage facilities, data centers and power plants and confirmation of the federal needs planning law are urgently required.

The call for action comes after Economics Minister Katarina Reiche (CDU) presented a highly anticipated report on Monday, indicating a lower electricity demand in the coming years than previously estimated. Meyerjürgens acknowledged the report’s confirmation that network infrastructure, renewable energy sources and flexibility measures must be jointly planned and developed to ensure a realistic, efficient and secure energy transition conducive to affordability and climate protection.

Key priorities for Minister Reiche and the government now include facilitating the grid-supportive utilization of storage solutions, optimizing the use of existing network capacity, streamlining offshore grid connections and prioritizing the deployment of overhead power lines. These actions, Tennet asserts, will enhance the overall system’s efficiency and contribute to cost reductions within the energy sector.
