The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is facing renewed challenges as she will be subject to two separate motions of no confidence in the European Parliament during its upcoming plenary session. According to an internal communication from Parliament President Roberta Metsola and reported by Politico, the debate and votes on these motions are scheduled for October 6th to 9th.
The motions were formally submitted on September 5th, at the earliest permissible time under parliamentary rules, by two distinct political groups: “Patriotic Europeans” and The Left.
“Patriotic Europeans” have voiced concerns regarding a perceived lack of transparency and accountability on the part of President von der Leyen, specifically targeting her handling of trade agreements with Mercosur and the United States. The Left’s motion of no confidence also focuses on trade policy, but additionally expresses criticism related to President von der Leyen’s response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
This latest challenge comes after President von der Leyen successfully navigated a previous motion of no confidence against the entire European Commission in July.
